Some of you know this already, but I thought it was important to let everyone else know that my brother, River, isn't here anymore. He was the beautiful white dragon, but the first time he was here, we were born together. I called him my little brother, but you know, I think he was much, much older than he looked. It doesn't make sense, scientifically, but still...it's just something I feel.

I miss him very much, of course, but he couldn't be free here, and I think he needed to. The last day I saw him, he wanted to give me a ride on his back—and no, dragon vocal chords aren't very suited for speech, but we understood each other—and it was so fun! I felt so light, and it was a beautiful day. I was really happy. Afterward, he set me down and I hugged him, and he went back into the sky, and he was gone.

It isn't that he found a way out of the glass. I know he wasn't that high. Sometimes people just sort of 'poof' out of here, and that's what happened, but I like to think that he's back where he came from, and he can fly really free now, as high into the sky as he wants to. It's very logical that that's where he would go when he's not here.

Anyway, I just wanted to share with all of you. Please don't forget River.

It looks like we've got so many new faces lately! It's very nice to meet you all, even if we haven't met yet. My name is Rosalind, and I'm the head scientific investigator for the Watch. I work for Mr. Stoneface, who is a very nice man but very tough, so don't break the laws, okay? There aren't very many, so it shouldn't be hard. But if you do, please try to leave some evidence for me to examine.

[Written hastily after a few minutes]

I can't believe I almost forgot! Speaking of the Watch, we really need a Watch house to work out of. That's what Mr. Stoneface says. Since the other members of the Watch are so good at their jobs, I don't always need to analyze evidence for them, so I volunteered to take charge of fundraising so we can build one! Um. Only I've never done anything like that before, so...maybe everyone could share ideas here? And we can decide on the best ones! Remember, a housed Watch is an effective Watch!

This place is creepy. And big. And on fire.

Mr. Stoneface, I don't think the things you're teaching me are going to help much here, though if anything with goolies attacks me I'll definitely kick it in them. I did get some things for the Watch before the mall changed, though.

[A minute later, this gooey splat appears]

Sorry. A really big bug landed on my journal.

I've been offered a position as a journal maker, so my brother and I have moved to Section 3. We didn't get to meet any of our new neighbors yet, but I'm sure we will, so hello in advance! And to my new co-workers—I start tomorrow, so I'll meet you in person then.

I'm really quite excited. These journals are so fascinating; I'm looking forward to learning how they're constructed!

Excuse me, can anyone tell me if they can read this? A quick note will be fine. There's no reason something I write down in my journal with normal ink and paper should show up in someone else's. I'm pretty sure it's scientifically impossible.

But I'm also sure that human beings don't normally hatch from giant cocoons, and if they did, they would hatch as babies. Except I did, and my brother River did, and Cara said everyone here does, so maybe 'impossible' is just something we haven't figured out the reason for yet.

So please let me know if you can read this! I don't think she was lying to me, but she might be misinformed, and anyway it's not good to just take someone's word for it when I can test the hypothesis myself.

Oh, my name is Rosalind.
